ProPublica

The Most Detailed Map of Cancer-Causing Industrial Air Pollution in the U.S.

ProPublica’s analysis of five years of modeled EPA data identified more than 1,000 toxic hot spots across the country and found that an estimated 250,000 people living in them may be exposed to levels of excess cancer risk that the EPA deems unacceptable.

CAVEAT: This map does not reflect oil and gas development; however, it does capture large established end-use infrastructure, such as petrochemical and fertilizer plants.

Where are Organizations Monitoring?

Map details the many watersheds in and around the Marcellus Shale where organizations conduct water quality monitoring, in addition to showing the boundaries of the Marcellus Shale formation and drilled wells. Darker shaded watersheds denote a higher “density” of monitoring in those watersheds.
